I hadn’t originally planned to work in recruitment but on reading various job descriptions and finding out more, it was an industry I was suddenly excited about. Prior to Hays I did a placement as a Researcher at another recruitment firm where I supported the contingent side of their business. I was keeping my eyes open for permanent roles during my time there and when I saw Hays advertisement for the Executive Researcher role, I jumped at the opportunity! Thank goodness I did as it was the ideal move for me and I have so far loved exploring the world of C-Suite.

The essence of the job at Hays was similar to the placement I had previously done so I managed to pick things up quite fast. That being said, the business model for executive search is entirely different to the contingent side of recruitment and it took me two or so months to properly adjust. I had to understand that my role was no longer about the number of CVs we sent to clients but more importantly, the quality of very senior candidates that we sent. It also took me a while to get my head around how long it can take to close a role. I had been used to the process from interview to job offer being anything from two weeks to two months. In executive search, due to the seniority level of candidates and their notice periods and non-compete clauses, the time from interview to them staring a role can be more than 12 months!

The culture at Hays is unique and was a key factor in attracting me to my role. The overall feel is very positive and this is one of the very few companies who have mental health advocates within the business, who strongly promote diversity and inclusion, and who have a dynamic yet collaborative performance-driven environment. This suits and attracts ambitious individuals like me and I can see that your growth in the company doesn’t depend on anything else but your own merit.
